So, BambooPink. I'm sure most of you have heard this mentioned over the past couple of weeks. Me too. And honestly, the first couple of times I saw it, I just skimmed right over. Squirrel-mageddon

So if you follow me on Twitter, you know what's been going on in the TCP household of late: the War on Squirrels. We had FOUR of the vile rodents coming and going in our attic, one slutty female and three males. Apparently, it is squirrel breeding season (file that under Things I Never Wanted to Know) and they were setting up housekeeping. In my house.

One wildlife removal specialist, one attic solutions specialist, five traps on the roof, and several hundred dollars later, we appear to be (knock wood) squirrel free. THANK YOU BABY JESUS. I can honestly say that the sound of them scratching in the ceiling will probably give me nighmares for the rest of my life. Horrifying. I wish I had recorded it so I could play it for the clearly mentally deficient residents of my neighborhood who insist on feeding the little buggers. People, they are just rats with mall hair! Do not feed them!!

Moving along, we are getting ready around here for Mini #2's second birthday! How did that happen? He is supposed to remain my baby for-eva. He is All Boy these days, obsessed with trucks, sports, and wrestling with his brother. The two of them are the best of friends and the worst of enemies. In five minutes time, they can go from cuddling together on the couch together to full-fledged, death-to-the-loser wrestlemania. Oy.

The boys and I are also counting down to our trip to Alabama. We're going to visit my brother in Birmingham again, and then spend a few days down on the Gulf Coast. So excited. Am ordering record high temps, because I am so over this cold weather.

Two Things

So, two days running! I'm on a roll now. (And, can I just say thanks for all the comments welcoming me back? So great to hear!)

Firstly, Sperry Women's and Kids' on Rue La La today. The women's stuff is fine, but I am dying over the girl's shoes. DYING.

Secondly, and this is last minute I know, but Emily Lacey is having a sale that is crazy-good. Again, more fun for girls stuff, but you can design your own smocked outfits for a very reasonable price... 50% off. I'm so tempted, but after Mr TC referred to Mini #2's longall as "a dress" today, I'm not sure how the smocking would go over around here!

Don't Call It a Comeback...

I went out with my college girlfriends last Saturday night. Girls' night. There are about 10 of us out, drinking ~~a lot of~~ wine, when one of my friends starts giving me a lecture. On abandoning my blog. And you know, she was right. I do miss it. I love me some twitter, but on occasion, my opinions simply cannot be confined to less than 140 characters. (I know, you're simply shocked.)

So thank you, T, for the kick in the pants. I will try. You might be the only one still reading, though!!

What's new at the TCP house? In a nutshell, I am completely over winter and the related CONSTANT illnesses of the TCP boys, Mini #2 started climbing out of his crib this week (Lord give me strength), and I am attempting to learn how to use my sewing machine. That should be good for a laugh. I did, however, get a machine that does a monogram stitch. So I have a good incentive here. Also, my Jersey Shore and Bachelor mania continues...

So I make no promises of regular posting, but one of my summer to-do list items was to clear out the closets a bit. Two pregnancies in the last four years has made for a wide range of sizes in my wardrobe, and a few Lillys, VV, or Cape Madras items that aren't the best fit.

I considered posting these on eBay or on Re-Lilly, but am lazy and thought I would try this first. So let's see how this goes! (And please forgive my wretched photography. I'm bad enough at taking snapshots of people, let alone close ups of clothing!! And yes, I realize some are sideways, but I can't flip them.)

On a Break

This is probably stating the obvious, given that my last post was, uh, almost 6 months ago, but I'm apparently taking a break from the TCP blog. Hats off to all of you who are at home with two (or more!) kids full time and still blogging, because I cannot seem to ever get around to it.

I have enormous guilt every week when I get my blog stats email and see how many visitors I've had in the past week. And I compose blog posts in my head all the time...but something always seems to distract me. So, I'm officially hanging up my blogging shoes for the rest of the summer. Maybe in the fall, when Mini #1 is in preschool for four blissful hours three days a week, I'll get organized and be able to blog a little.

In the meantime, you can find me on Twitter. Because I love me some Twitter. (I have been accused of excessive Twittering. I find that to be a gross overstatement. Ahem.)

Bits and Bobs

In an attempt to make dinner that my increasingly picky three year old would eat, I made fondue the other night (inspired in part by this lovely lady's recent post). Used the super delicious and easy recipe from The WASP Cookbook (beer+ sharp cheddar +mustard + salt) and expected my kid would love it because it combines two things he loves, dipping and cheese. So you can imagine how thrilled I was when he asked if he could please have some ketchup to dip his food in instead of the "yucko" stuff. Sigh.

When the baby gets a little fussy in his high chair, he immediately brightens up if I sing "Pants on the Ground" to him. What does this say about him? Or me, for that matter??

In case I needed another reason to be excited for out upcoming trip to Florida (also known as the "February in Chicago SUCKS so let's get the heck out of town" Trip), I present you with reason #4,305: Sweet Waters, a Lilly shop located on the property. And the staff? Outfitted in Lilly.

Mr. TC sure knew what he was doing when he booked us at this hotel!

Back in November, the Junior League of Chicago hosted its annual Gazebo Holiday Market. It's one of my favorite events of the year (umm, knocking out requirements while shopping? yes, please) and I've been meaning to write it up ever since. You know, for the last two months or so.

There were some new vendors this year that I really loved (more on them another day), but one of my favorite parts was that I got to meet the fabulous Lara of La Plates in person! We had emailed back and forth about promotions and giveaways a while back, but it was a riot to finally meet. She is such a doll (and not just because she said nice things about my blog) and I got the cutest place mat for M. This specific design combo isn't shown on the website, but if you want the same one, just email Lara. She was so helpful and is totally willing to customize.

On one side, the "Manners" design below. M actually really loves this and lines all of his utensils up in the proper locations (and gets mad if he is lacking a spoon or knife to line up!)

The other side is the "Elementary Print Handwriting" on a green back ground with his name. It is so adorable.

And, it has held up very well over the past two months. (One thing I am learning is that in a house of three boys, things must be extremely durable!)

I don't have any of the actual plates yet, but I've been so happy with the place mat that I think I will eventually get some for the boys. And maybe me.

TCP's Winter Survival Guide, 2010 Edition

It seems that most of the country is experiencing the lovely "Artic Blast" that we Third Coasters see multiple times every winter. Looks like it's time for my annual winter survival list (see previous versions here and here):

1. Hot Toddies. My recipe is a mixture of tea, hot water, bourbon, lemons, honey, cloves, cinnamon sticks, and a little sugar. I just eyeball the measurements, depending upon (a) how cold I am and (b) whether I need to get up and be productive in the morning.

2. Tree Hut Shea Butter Body Wash. I like to switch up my products seasonally, and this is my winter choice. It smells AMAZING (a key requirement for me) and it's really moisturizing. You can find it the grocery store (Jewel, for those on the Third Coast), too, which makes it easy to pick up, since I am there every damn day.

3. Crabtree & Evelyn La Source Hand Recovery. My hands are a DISASTER. Between the constant washing/hand sanitizer use and the cold temps, the skin on my hands is incredibly dry. This scrub/lotion helps (and I need all the help I can get).
4. Long underwear. Yep, I said it. A necessary evil when the mercury dips this low. My personal fave (with props to Heaven in a Paper Cup, who alerted me to this particular brand/style) is the unfortunately named "Cuddl Duds". I know, the name is gross, but it's comfy and I like the camisole as a layering piece.

5. Most important? Something to look forward to, preferrably something warm and tropical. The TCP family is heading here in February, and I am repeating "Marco Island, Marco Island" like a mantra as I stuff squirmy children into snowsuits and slip-slide my way around town.

Every two years, I get together with about 10 of my girlfriends from college for The Girls Trip (always capitalized, thankyouverymuch). We all met in our sorority ~~many~~ several years ago, and even though we're spread out over many states and now have babies and/or husbands and/or high powered jobs, when we get together, it's like no time at all has passed.

I just booked my flight and I am BEYOND EXCITED. And already mentally packing my bag.

We're knee deep in Christmas preparations around here, as I'm sure you all are too. I *think* I'm done shopping, the cards are out, wrapping is well under way, and the baking is in full swing.
My oldest loves to help me in the kitchen, and with the cold Chicago weather, we're always looking for more indoor activities, so we decided to make a Christmas Cookie a Week. Here's what we did:

Week One - Spritz Christmas Trees
You know 'em, you love 'em. A classic. We add few drops of green food coloring to make the tree shape.

3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 1/2 cups butter softened
1 cup granulated sugar
1 egg
2 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon clear vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon no-color almond extract

Preheat oven to 350ºF.
In bowl, combine flour and baking powder. In large bowl, beat butter and sugar with electric mixer until light and fluffy. Add egg, milk, vanilla and almond extract; mix well. Gradually add flour mixture to butter mixture; beat until combined. Do not chill. Fill cookie press with dough and with desired disks, press cookies onto ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake 10-12 minutes or until edges are light golden brown. Cool 2 minutes on cookie sheet on cooling rack. Remove from sheet; cool completely.Makes: 7-8 dozen cookies.

Week Two - Pepparkakar (Swedish Gingerbread) Cookies
I grew up on these cookies...my favorites. This is my grandmother's recipe, and it makes a TON. We invited some friends over to make these with us, lots of hands make it more fun ( otherwise you may find yourself still baking at midnight and the words that will be coming to mind aren't too christmassy).

2/3 cup brown sugar
2/3 cup dark Caro syrup
1 teaspoon ginger
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon cloves
3/4 tablespoon baking soda
2/3 cup butter
1 egg
5 cups of flour

Heat sugar, syrup, and spices to boiling. Add baking soda and pour over butter in a bowl. Stir until butter melts. Add egg and sifted flour. Blend and knead on board. Chill. Roll out and cut with cookie cutters. Place on greased baking sheet and bake at 325 degrees for 8-10 minutes.

Week Two and a Half - Fudge
What? We hadn't made anything chocolate yet and Mama had a craving. We make the marshmallow Fluff kind, the recipe is on the label!

Week Three - Stained Glass Cookies
This was my first time making these, so there are still some things to iron out (e.g., purple lifesavers turn a little bit brown when cooked!). The recipe is from Southern Sideboards, the Junior League of Jackson, Mississippi cookbook.

3/4 cup Crisco shortening
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
8 packages of Lifesavers (red and green work best, IMO, orange and purple less so)
cookie cutters of 2 sizes (the smaller cutters should be 1/2 to 1/4 inch smaller than the larger)

Mix Crisco, sugar, eggs, and flavoring. Blend in flour, baking powder, salt. Cover and chill at least one hour. Roll dough 1/8 inch thick and cut out cookies with larger cutters. Place cookies on a baking sheet that has been covered in foil or parchment paper. Then cut out a section from the cookie with the smaller cookie cutter. Crush candy into small pieces (TCP note: this is an OUTSTANDING task for your preschool age helpers!) and fill in cut-out section, making sure there is enough candy to reach into the corners. Bake at 375 degrees for seven to nine minutes, until cookie is lightly browned and candy has melted. Cool completely on baking sheet and then peel away paper/foil.

Week Four - English Toffee Bars
From the JLC cookbook I worked on, Peeling the Wild Onion. I am now required to make these every year, or I will hear about it from my family! And it is SO easy.

1/2 cup (one stick) butter
1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs
1 14oz can sweetened condensed milk
1 1/4 cups almond toffee bits (1 package)
1 1/4 cups English toffee bits (1 package)
6 oz semisweet chocolate chips
1 cup chopped pecans
1/2 cup sliced almonds

Melt the butter in a 9x13 inch baking dish in a preheated 325 degree oven. Layer the graham cracker crumbs, condensed milk, almond toffee biuts, English toffee bits, chocolate chips, pecans, and almonds over the butter. Press layers firmly. Bake for 25 minutes or until the edges are lightly browned. Cool on a wire rack and cut into bars.

This is why I'm gaining back all of the baby weight I had lost. Ah well. I'm not even going to pretend that I'm likely to be posting again in 2009, but one of my New Year's resolutions is to get back to my little blog--I miss it!

When I was in high school, I was lucky enough to see Rudolf Nuryev perform during his final tour. This afternoon, I saw a performance by perhaps the other greatest dancer of the 20th century: Mikhail Baryshnikov. I have long been an admirer of his (okay, I may have had a giant poster of him in my room until I graduated from college...), but this was the first time I've ever seen him perform live.

All I can say about it is: wow.

Thumbs Up Thursday: Mom Agenda

I think it's a perfect wrap for this time of year. It's an extra layer, but it isn't a super heavy weight. The madras lining (in the navy version, anyway) has a little bit of almost every color...a little pink, a little red, a little green, etc. So it goes with absolutely everything. One caveat: it does run pretty small. I usually wear a small or a size two. I ordered a small and it is pretty fitted. Not too tight, but definitely not sloppy at all. Also, I have (to quote Mr. TC) "long monkey arms" and when I cuff the sleeves to reveal the madras lining, the sleeves are an inch or two above my wrist bone. So you may want to order a size up, depending upon what kind of fit you want. You can pick up one of your own here.

So, apparently I took the past month and a half off from blogging. Huh. I knew it had been awhile, but had no idea it has been that long!! Is anyone still out there? Now that I've somewhat emerged from my summertime daze?

What have I been up to? Well, I celebrated the anniversary of my 29th birthday once again, spent lots of time hanging with my boys, did a few little day trips around the Third Coast, went to few soirees, tried to learn how to cook like a grown up, started one boy on solid foods (can I get an AMEN for that one? I am so excited about it) and potty trained the other boy (can I get an even bigger AMEN for that? Seriously), so I've been a little busy. Oh, but did I mention that now my big guy is off to preschool on Tuesday and Thursday mornings for two ~~blissful short~~ hours?

Couldn't you just die?

Now we're gearing up for the busy school schedule (busy for me anyway, because I am being indoctrinated in the tradition of Parental Involvement at Private School), M's birthday, and of course, Halloween. Certain people around here are pretty excited about it already and have spent hours poring over the costume catalog. Final verdict? Spiderman. Natch.

Now I must be off to continue my search for a Spidey bounce house, which I cannot find anywhere other than Craigslist postings in Spokane and Sacramento. (If you have one that you would like to unload, email me. No joke.) And to order some super rush last minute invites. And figure out exactly what I am doing for this party. Argh.

Not too long ago (like the vague terms applied to time? Procrastination 101), I received a little surprise package from Taylor and Andrew at Little Barrel.

Not only did they send me one of the "pruned" headbands that I had ~~drooled over on more than one occasion~~ mentioned in passing, but they also enclosed a beautiful sash as well. Thank you so much!!

So, the Cheers Pruned Headband in Rose, pictured below. I must admit that I was nervous about this and that's why I hadn't ordered one. I have a tiny head (seriously, I will on occasion buy children's hats) and I was afraid of slippage. This style headband isn't always great for me. But while the headband is definitely far from tight, it doesn't slip off. The width is perfect and I love the color with my ~~completely unhighlighted hahahahaha~~ blonde hair. So overall, a thumbs up.

The Bottleneck Scarf Belt, in Pink,

Super cute. I folded it about three-ish times to fit it through the loops in my khakis, but it didn't look bunchy. After tying, it hit me a little above the knee (but again, I am short, so if you are more than 5'3" I'm sure it will hang a little higher). Again, a thumbs up.

The perfectly royal Preppy Princess sent over the cutest monogrammed towels. Do you think W will mind sharing with the rest of us? They match the upstairs bath perfectly and I adore the ribbon trim.

As if that weren't enough, she also sent along an adorable Lilly Pulitzer photo album that has become my official brag book...I always keep it filled with new pictures of the tiny TCP boys. Thank you so much, Princess!!

Next up is a onesie from the always fabulous Monogram Momma's SWAG shop. W got this as a gift from my now-former (sniff) coworker and I love, love, love it. The design is printed in the fabric, not on top, if that makes sense, so it won't crack or peel off. Back in the Saddle Again

(and no, I am not referring to Shea on Southern Belles Louisville, although that might be my current favorite show. Shut up. I know.)

So we've been back from Michigan for four days. In that time, I have done eight loads of laundry, made a list of twelve things I want to blog about, studiously procrastinated on a freelance assignment, watched the aforementioned SBL program--one of the finest hours of television you will find anywhere, and made some fan-freaking-tastic cookies (regular Tollhouse chocolate chip recipe, plus three tablespoons of cocoa powder).

Michigan was lovely. The weather? Notsomuch. Picture five days of rain and 60 degree temps, in a tinier with every day (not so child-proofed) cottage. Gin was needed, I can't lie. Of course, by the time we left, the weather was gorgeous. Isn't that always the way? I actually went to the same towns as Preppy Little Dress...check out her pics, because my camera is on the fritz and she did a fantastic job of recapping the shops. A few shout outs, though, are needed:

First, the Great Lakes Children's Museum. A LIFESAVER. That is all I can say. By Wednesday, we desperately needed this.

Perennial TCP fave Anchor Cottage. I found the cutest wall hanging for W's room. Pics to come if I can figure out what exactly the "lens error" is on my camera.

New find Bad Pony. We drove by this shop on the way to the cottage (it's on M-204 between Sutton's Bay and Leland) and I was intrigued. Then I saw a bag hanging on the arm of another mom at the children's museum and knew I needed to stop in. Because my parents never bought me that pony for my birthday, I was strictly shopping for myself, although they do carry really cute accessories for horses. I ended up with an oilcloth tote that I love. I think that with two boys in the house, I should probably just cover everything I own in oilcloth, quite frankly.

Is it not darling? And nearly indestructible!

Finally, I have a shameful admission to make. Because of the aforementioned rain, I picked up a new novel. Because I had finished The Mating Rituals of the North American WASP--loved it, btw--I needed something new. TCP Mom is a middle school teacher and tries to keep up with what her kids are reading. She had just finished a couple of books and passed them on to me. (You know where this is going, right?) Yes, I have succumb to the ridiculous teenage vampire books. I cannot understand why, as they are not very well written, I find the protagonist to be completely loathsome, and cannot understand the appeal of her vampire boyfriend. And yet? I still read the first two books cover to cover. And have no doubt that I will read the rest.

But fear not, I have finished them and can return to the blogging world with some exciting information that is unrelated to mopey teenagers and the fictional creatures they love.

The First Day of the Rest of My Life.

Last week, I resigned from my day job.

I'm taking the plunge and staying at home with the two tiny TCP boys. I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to do this, especially now, when so many are dealing with involuntary unemployment. Obviously, I will need to scale back (read: no new Bonannos for me this year) but I'm more than willing to sacrifice a little for this amazing opportunity.

I've always wanted to be able to stay at home with my kids...while searching through my desk recently, I came across a newspaper clipping. It was an editorial by Kathleen Parker* entitled "Giving Girls Another Career Choice: At-home Mom." I don't know when I clipped it out, but the article on the back of my clipping is about Elian Gonzales, so it's clearly been a while. It's a great editorial and I wish I could find an online version, but in a nutshell, she talks about how we as a society have been so focused on telling girls that they can do ANYTHING (be an astronaut! be an engineer! be president!) that we might overlook what they actually want to do, especially if it staying at home with children. I have an advanced degree. I have been an attorney for nearly a decade. But for me, right now, I find more satisfaction in listening to a slightly lispy alphabet song. I feel more accomplished knowing that I got my boys bathed and settled in bed, with their finger- and toenails trimmed, than I ever did when I "won" a motion.

I'm not saying it's what everyone should do. But it's what I need to do right now, and I am so grateful to Mr. TC for supporting me and our family while I take this time.

Now back to our regularly scheduled programming...

I did the unthinkable today. I did school drop off with a baseball hat and not even a stitch of make up. Not even mascara. (I have light eyelashes, so I never leave the house without at least that.) But I was up half the night with a sick baby and the toddler woke up for the day at 6:15, so a shower wasn't happening. So this was the look:

This Should Be Good for a Few Laughs

This summer, in addition to Tiny Tots soccer and tumbling, the boys and I will be participating in Strollercize. Those of you who know me in real life know that I am not, shall we say, athletically inclined. Running? It is not My Thing. I present you with Exhibit A, my "running shoes" purchased in excess of 10 years ago...

So picture me, with the "double-wide" stroller on a "fast-paced jog through the neighborhood, ending with an upper body and abs workout in [their] enclosed playground." The things I will do to ensure that I can fit back into my regular clothes....

Clearly, new shoes are required for such an undertaking. Behold, my new (pink!) shoes. I won't even tell you how good of a deal I got on them, but suffice to say, I did not pay the shocking retail price. (Who knew shoes for sports were so pricey?? Thank goodness I only buy such things once every decade.)

Just listened to the fabulous Jen Lancaster being interviewed on NPR. She is awesome and also wanted to marry Alex P. Keaton when she was younger, so clearly we would have been friends in 7th grade. If you haven't read her latest memoir, Pretty in Plaid: A Life, A Witch and A Wardrobe, or, the Wonder Years Before the Condescending,Egomaniacal, Self-Centered Smart Ass Phase , you need to buy it. It is hilarious, especially the parts about sorority rush. I literally laughed out loud while reading it. She's doing a book signing here in town today, at the Barnes & Noble, 1441 W. Webster Ave. at 7:30 PM. I would love to go, but am not sure I could convince Mr. TC to handle bed/bath time solo so that I could go be a fan girl.

So much to discuss.... firstly, I got my hair cut. A lot. Like, shorter than it has been in years. I think I like it, but am afraid that I am veering into Mom Hair territory. It's a long bob. Frumpy? Or okay because Gwyneth and Reese sport similar looks? My hair was super long, though, almost to my bra strap, and it was taking me 8.5 years to dry it. So Something Had To Be Done.

Secondly, I am peeved at eBay because I keep losing auctions for clothing for myself, but winning them for clothing for my children. Is the universe trying to tell me something?? I am not listening, if so.

What's in a Name?

So, I think we have finally decided upon a middle name for the baby. With our oldest, Mr. TC and I were in total agreement and had a name picked out approximately 20 seconds after learning the gender. This time? Notsomuch.

Part of the problem is that I have lots of rules for baby names. Nothing trendy. Nothing that contains extraneous "Y"s. Because our last name begins with an R, nothing that ends in an R. No first names that would rhyme with our last name. No monograms that spell words or common acronyms. Must have an acceptable, preferrably one syllable nickname (because our last name is so very, very long...four, count 'em FOUR syllables). Those are just off the top of my head. There are even more rules. And that's before we even start to consider Mr. TC's opinions.

Even though we have arrived at a name at long last, I probably won't use it on the blog. This has given me something of a dilemma. I've been calling our oldest boy "TCP Baby" or "TCP Toddler" for the past couple of years. But now there will be two of them. I could go with Eldest and Youngest. #1 and #2 (although, that somehow strikes me as bad in an Austin Powers-Dr. Evil way).

Or I could plug their real names into the Blogthings Preppy Name Generator and come up with Pseudonyms for them...

Today, despite below freezing temps on the Third Coast, I'm sporting the above Lilly scarf as a symbolic gesture of sisterhood with all the preppy bloggers who are currently attending the Martha Stewart taping. Honestly, it's gotten so that I hate to leave my dreary little cube, knowing that I will be assaulted with cries of "you look ready to pop!" "when is your due date?" "how much longer?" "you must be having a boy/a girl/twins!" each time I venture to the kitchen, the coffee shop, or even the ladies' room. Also, if I do not know you, I will not discuss my plans for childbirth/pain relief/nursing/diapering/sleep training. So you can just save your breath. Ask me about the weather. Obama's budget. Where I got my shoes. I am completely capable of discussing matters not related to pregnancy.

If my water breaks on your shoes, then we need to discuss my pregnancy. Until then, let's move on to other topics.

Something in the Water

In my office, there have been four pregnant women, including me, due in the past six months or so. Three of them (so everyone but me) delivered their babies at least one month early. Thankfully, all the babies and mamas are okay. As of this weekend, I'll have made it longer than any of the others.

Massive sale over at English Tea Paperie. I so want these, but I recently moved my stationery from the old cabinet to a new drawer, and let's just say I'm pretty well stocked for the moment.

TCP fave Tucker Blair has reworked their delivery model and is now 100% web-based. This means no more retail mark-up, so the prices are lower. You know how I love the headbands, and now I'm trying to decide what belt I want to get when I can FINALLY wear belts again! Keep an eye on their site...I've heard that lots of new things are in the works later this year.

Word on the street is that the Multiple Choices Winnetka location is closing its doors. I hope that the Lincoln Square store will be staying open!! I've heard that the Winnetka shop will re-open as "Ellen's on Elm" in mid-February, but right now, everything in the store is 20 % off.

*Also, thank you to everyone who was so kind about my latest child care drama. I even got resumes from potential sitters! I really appreciate all the concern. TCP Toddler started at "school" on Monday. It's been a rough couple of days, but we're hoping that things will settle down soon. Wish us luck!

Retail Therapy

Due to the most recent childcare drama that has befallen me (which I still find difficult to discuss without using profanity...suffice it to say that the nanny quit, not exactly great timing when one is oh, MASSIVELY pregnant, and let's just leave it at that), I am feeling the need to shop.

With boy #2's arrival on the horizon, Operation Big Boy Room has been launched. We're keeping the nursery pretty much as is for the new kid (you can see pictures of it here, it still looks pretty much the same) and giving TCP Toddler a new room. Mr. TC has been evicted from his office and is rehabbing the basement for his "man cave," and the old office is TCP Toddler's now.

For wall color, I again went with the Behr Saltwater pictured above. I think it's the perfect pale blue (it's much lighter on the wall than in the swatch, I think). Also, I'm all about continuity for TCP Toddler, and I think keeping the same wall color will help in that regard.

The woodwork in this room is darker than in the nursery, so the furniture will match that. We found a fantastic Third Coast furniture wholesaler, Rooms 4 Kids, and ordered the bunk beds (!) from them. The owner is a great guy, and you might recognize a few of the styles...he sells to Pottery Barn Kids, etc. This is the bed we ordered, except ours also has the underbed storage drawers (key for an old house without large closets). It was delivered last Saturday and I'm a big fan!

I actually took a few pics, but cannot find the proper camera cord, so will update with those later.

The next step? Window coverings! (And some sort of gate/device to confine the child to his bed a nd room. Yikes. I have visions of waking up at 3 a.m. to the sounds of a Thomas DVD being played downstairs unless TCP Toddler is secured in his room.)I have these curtains on the way from PBK...fingers crossed that the colors work out and that they block out a sufficient amount of light. Luckily, this room faces west, so the blackout won't be quite as necessary as it was in the east-facing nursery.

We're going to do a bit of a train theme because that is what my guy loves most of all, although I will NOT be doing a room that looks like Thomas threw up all over it. Plus, I know that the day will come when trains aren't cool anymore, so I'm not about to go crazy buying stuff that will be tossed aside when the next phase comes along. He got sheets with a train pattern (similar to these...found at TJ Maxx) and I'm picking up this vintage poster

We still need to figure out some storage options, and get a real rug. In the meantime, the giant foam alphabet mat that has been gracing my living room floor will be in there. And of course, I need to monogram the wall with his name/initials in some manner. So there is still much to do, but things are finally starting to come together!!

Three for Thursday

Because I simply cannot bear to discuss the hideous weather for even one more minute, I have resolved to ignore it entirely and post three happy-making things instead. And invent new words while I'm at it, apparently.

1. Highlights. I won't disclose how long it had been since my last visit to the salon, but dear god, I had forgotten how happy fresh blonding makes me. Bonus: upon my arrival home, TCP Toddler petted my head and said, "Mama pretty." Swoooon. My kid knows how to get an extra 15 minutes of Sprout, that's for sure! Of course, then he immediately requested, "pony back, Mama!" Apparently, seeing my hair out of a ponytail disturbs him greatly. Lucky for him, this is a rare occurrence.

2. The new Lilly stationery line. The Preppy Princess has been posting sneak peaks at all the goodies from LP that she will be carrying in her store and I've been just drooling over it. I want all of it!! I think, at the minimum, that I require the crown. You know, for birthdays and special events.

3. Not quite as droolworthy as freshly blonde hair or Lilly Pulitzer treats, but an interesting article that asks whether bad manners indicate developmental issues or just bad parenting. Certainly food for thought.

I would just like to state, for the record, that this winter can suck it. I am Officially Done. Here on the Third Coast, we've already had more snow than we usually get all winter long. And January is only half over. People, we still have a good two to three months to go!! According to the infamous Tom Skilling:

Though it is not even mid-January, the city has already surpassed the 124 year long-term seasonal snow average of 36.6 inches with 37.9 inches on the books. Typically 60 percent of the season's snow is yet to fall, so the city could be looking at its second straight 60 inch-plus snow season.

I am not amused by this.

It isn't helping that pregnancy has turned me into a giant weeble-wobble on the ice. Or that my internal thermostat is eight kinds of crazy right now. I need layers for the ridiculously cold weather outdoors, but then I am immediately roasting once I set foot inside.

So, to help my fellow cold weather sufferers, here are a few things helping me to survive on the frozen tundra:

Ugg mittens. Yes, they have a ~~slightly obnoxious~~ logo on the hand. But they are the warmest things EVER. I got them as a Christmas gift this year and have been wearing them nonstop ever since.

Mama Mio Tummy Rub Oil. I won't say it's preventing stretch marks (sadly, that ship sailed over two years ago when I was expecting TCP Toddler), but my skin is so dry and itchy right now and this stuff is really soothing.

A good novel to read when the train is delayed. Right now, I've got my nose stuck in American Wife by Curtis Sittenfeld. So far, I can't put it down!

And here's a little something that I really need to acquire...the ponytail hat!

Doesn't that look like just the thing for someone like me (aka, one who has their hair up at least every other day)??

Completely random, but I feel the need to share how much I am enjoying my new kate spade artist theme on my google homepage.

Right now, it's the cutest print of sailboats, starfish, and crabs in red white and blue. It's helping me to remember that someday, even though that day seems VERY far away right now, it will be summertime.
