Spring Swap Arrives at This Old House

Chez TCP is around 100 years old, give or take. This means that we have lovely original woodwork and a carved fireplace. And apparently, asbestos! Joy.

Mr. TC and I have been meeting with contractors to get some work done on the place. Top of the list? New siding. But apparently it is going to be a ginormous hassle because the current siding is asbestos. Yeah, cancer-causing, expensive difficult to remove, "sorry, ma'am, we don't handle that" asbestos. Sigh.

I had really gotten excited about doing these renovations and was pretty bummed out. So it was such a nice treat to come home to my fabulous preppy spring swap package from Magnolia Mama!! It was full of the nicest treats you could imagine, including a fab tote bag, monogrammed stationery and return address labels, super cute placemats, lip gloss, and the most delicious dark chocolate truffle bar in the world. I'm sure I'm forgetting something, but it was just perfect. (Will add a pic, Check out the pics below because, really, it was too cute and you all have to see it.) Thank you so much, MM!!!

My parent's house was 100 yrs old and it was on the North Shore. It was torn down last year just before Christmas. The contractor had to get the asbestos out of there even before it was torn down.

The house was built with telephone tile and the foundation fell. That was the reason for it coming down.

The lad will stay in my family though because sibling # 6 is going to build on it with her family.

Asbestos? Oh good lord. I would rip the inspector who inspected your home prior to closing a new one. You poor thing. Renovating should be fun but rarely is, I think.

Unfortunately, I think asbestos in one form or another is pretty common in houses of that age, and it usually won't cause a problem as long as it is intact. I just didn't realize that they couldn't put the new siding up over the old! Oy.

The Magnolia house is 60+ years old and I'm sure we have asbestos somewhere. I actually think it's asbestos tiles under the carpet and porcelain tile in our basement.

I just got my package. Woohoo! You so perfectly wrapped each item. Love it. And I've already had three squares of chocolate negating the calories burned on a 5 mile run this morning.

Hi there. Good luck with the siding shopping. I have a lot of siding experience!! and I know it is hard to get a good feel that what you are getting is actually worth the huge amount you are paying.

Sorry to hear about the asbestos! Some friends of ours ran into this problem during their remodel and they found people to remove it through the EPA's website (http://www.epa.gov/asbestos/.) I know it's an absolute pain, but it's always worth it when the renovations are finished. Best of luck!
