Free Shipping for the Mamas

Everyone wants you to buy your mum something nice for Mother's Day, and to help you out, lots of etailers are offering free shipping:

Three Chickadees has free shipping with the code Mom, now through May 13.

English Tea Paperie has free shipping on all orders, now through May 6. I want to order some "family" stationery, as well as the supercute preppy whale note cards for TCP Baby. He's very good at keeping up with his correspondence, you know. I swear, I could blow the budget on notecards.

If you have, ahem, a new mom on your list, babystyle has free shipping and $10 off with the code MOMDEAL. (Note to husband: This does not mean that I want the big carseat for my Mother's Day gift. Just sayin'.)

Are you ready for the Sun Fest??

It's that time of year again...Bonanno's Annual Sun Fest sale!! From May 3--6, all Bonanno sandals are $20.00 OFF!!!! "In stock, right off the shelf sandals, or if you don't see what you want, customize at the same discount."

I've spent the last hour playing with styles and color combos being a productive employee. I definitely want regal blue with a purslane whipstitch, but am torn between the Chelsea and Nantucket styles...wish I could just get both!

Preppy Flowers

Not too much new and exciting in TCP world...other than the return of warm weather to the Third Coast! It was so lovely out last weekend, and just in the nick of time too, as I was thisclose to giving in to my husband's not-so-secret desire to move to California.

TCP Baby and I had a playdate on the patio on Saturday, and Sunday afternoon was spent volunteering at a JLC/Y-Me Garden Party. The rest of the weekend? Working on taming the jungle that is my backyard! When we moved in late last summer, there were so many other projects to tackle first, plus I was ginormously pregnant, so the outdoor projects were put off. Now we're ready to tackle it...but oh my! Ivy is lovely at the friendly confines, but it is arch-enemy #1 at Casa TCP!

I'm dreaming of all the flowers that I will plant once The Vile Weed is banished from the flower beds...definitely adding more lilacs and hydrangeas, maybe another holly bush. I've got a few tulips and daffodils that the previous owners planted. But what else? I'm new to the gardening game after living in condos and high rise apartments for the last 10 years. What's your favorite preppy bloom?

Gardening is one of those things that our people take very seriously, as you will know if you've ever seen them among the seed and bulb catalogues.
~Mrs. Falk Feeley, A Swarm of Wasps

You'll need a station wagon--the little car you had in the city isn't big enough for hauling around flats of pansies (to border the front walk)...

P.S.A.

Chicago girls: The TJ Maxx on State Street has a fat ton of Lilly stuff: skirts, dresses, swim suits. Especially if you wear a size 8, that seemed to be the most prevalent size in stock.

I picked up a Loise Heart Skirt in Palm Green Seafood Salad for under $50!

Five Questions One Should Never Ask

I'll just let you all guess which one I heard this morning...

5. "So, when are you getting married?"
4. "When are you two finally going to have kids?"
3. "Are you really tired today?" (interchangeable with "Did you wake up late today?")
2. "What is that you are eating?"
1. "Are you pregnant again already???

More for the Preppy Babies

Janie and Jack just sent me an email with this tagline: Warm sunny days call for preppy perfection and classic style. I couldn't agree more. What I would like to know is, when will the warm sunny days arrive??
Janie and Jack definitely gets the TCP Baby stamp of approval. He received their nursery rhyme onesies , which quickly became wardrobe staples. Very soft, yet completely durable (i.e., able to stand up to a diaper blow-out or two). Plus they have lots of cute boy clothes involving madras and labradors. How can you go wrong with those two things?

Wet Wednesday

Chicago is covered in a two-inch layer of slush this morning, most of which seems to have seeped into my shoes and socks.

I'm going to attempt to scrounge up a space-heater so I can warm my poor toes, but I wanted to drop off this cute new line of headbands from Chicago favorite 1154 Lill Street.

It almost makes you believe that spring is coming, doesn't it???

April 10, 2007

I know a couple of enterprising mamas that have recently started their own e-boutiques. So I'm going to shamelessly promote them, because (a) I'm all about helping out the sisters and (b) I honestly think they have some pretty adorable stuff.

If I had a little girl preppy baby, I would be All Over the Poodle Princess Designs bow-tique. Everything you need for the frilly girly-girl in your life...she has such cute tutus and hairbows! Sadly, TCP Baby is a very bald baby boy, so I can only live vicariously through others on this one.

A sorority friend has just launched her website, Simply Stylish Boutique. She sent me a goody bag full of baby items that I loved, but she also has a bridal section that features lots of fun monogrammed items. One cute idea that I had never seen before was the Monogram Signature Platter. Such a lovely keepsake for the happy couple!

High, Medium, Low

No sooner did I recover from BIL's wedding than I realized I need to pull together another outfit! TCP Baby's christening will be in a few weeks, May 6. He's wearing my family's heirloom christening gown, Husband has a new suit, but what will Mummy wear??? Chicago weather is notorious for being unpredictable (see, e.g., this weekend--snow possible on Easter!), so I can't go too summer-y. I got some inspiration this morning when I visited PreppyChic's blog and have decided that a shirt dress is just the thing. I'm considering several options:

High: Brooks Brother's Linen Stripe Dress, $198

Medium: J.Crew Sandstone striped pleated shirtdress, on sale for $69.99

Low: Isaac Mizrahi for Target Pink Stripe Shirtdress, $34.99

I'm leaning toward the Tar-jay dress because (a) this preppy is all about the Yankee Thrift; (b) I've never worn a shirt dress and don't know how into the look I will be, making me less ready to "invest" in the dress; (c) I'm thinking I want pink rather than blue; and (d) the long sleeves make it a better option for early May in Chicago (and also for the air-conditioned office this summer!). Sold.

What We Wore (A long overdue update)

I must apologize for my lengthy absence...it took me forever to get caught up with work (and life) after getting back into town!

If I have any readers left, they will remember that I promised a wardrobe recap from our trip to Miami for my brother in law's wedding. Here it is:

The Wedding

After all of my posting and polling, I wore a completely different dress to the wedding. The Ann Taylor Celebrations line has some really cute things, and I found that the Karen Crossdye strapless dress in watermelon was every thing I was looking for: pink, dressy enough but not too dressy, and very flattering. I paired it with my large pearl studs (they are about the size of a dime) and a double-strand pearl bracelet. My favorite Kate Spade Monarch shoes, and a pale pink pashmina finished off the look.

TCP Baby wore a sweet, and appropriately baby-ish, outfit from Hanna Andersson. (He did not, however, wear a hat in the Florida heat!)

My husband, alas, wore the dreaded Rental Tux.

The Rehearsal Dinner

My favorite was my outfit for the rehearsal dinner. I wore the JCrew patchwork madras beach dress, with a navy JCrew cashmere 3/4 length sleeve cardigan, and my blue and green Emma classic monogrammed Bonannos. I felt so comfortable, yet pulled together, in this outfit--which is a must when one is faced with hordes of in-laws that one has not seen since one's own wedding six years ago! Sadly, TCP Baby did not attend the rehearsal dinner, as it was past his bedtime, but my husband wore a navy Brooks Brothers suit and a pink Thomas Pink shirt with no tie. I love the suit-with-no-tie look on men, if it's done properly.
